What Is AFUE and Why Is It Important?

Energy efficiency is important with any heating system, and the way to know how efficient a certain gas furnace will be is to check its AFUE rating. AFUE stands for annual fuel utilization efficiency. It is a rating given in a percentage that tells you how much natural gas will be used to power your heating system and how much will be lost to combustion byproducts, aka, the fumes and toxins that are expelled through your furnace’s flue. For example, a furnace with an AFUE of 86% tells you that 14% of the fuel will be lost during the operation of your system; the same model with an AFUE of 90% means that this particular unit will lose 10% of its fuel to exhaust. The one thing to keep in mind is that AFUE does not tell you that a certain furnace will heat your home better than another; rather, it tells you a certain furnace will heat your home the same as another, but will use less energy to do so.

What Is a Condensing Furnace?

A condensing furnace, also known as a high–efficiency furnace, is a gas furnace that extracts the thermal energy from the combustion byproducts to add more heat to your home. It does this by having two heat exchangers instead of just one. It works like this: the combustion byproducts from the first heat exchanger are funneled to the second heat exchanger. In the second heat exchanger, thermal heat is extracted from the combustion byproducts created during the heating process, minus the harmful gases. This extra heat is then used to heat your home. Condensing furnaces can have AFUE ratings as high as 98%, so they are certainly something to consider if you need a new gas furnace for your home.
