What Are Some Common Gas Furnace Repairs?

You should always hire a trained expert to handle any and all repairs your gas furnace may need, but as a homeowner, it’s good to have an idea of what some of the more common heating repairs may be:

  • Problems with the pilot and/or ignition – your gas furnace generates heat by burning natural gas. Today’s furnaces are equipped with electronic ignition, which means there is no longer a standing pilot in gas furnaces (although if you have an older furnace, you may have a standing pilot). If there are issues with the electronic ignition, your gas furnace will not ignite.
  • Cracked heat exchanger – the heat exchanger is the component that the burner warms to provide heat to your home. The heat exchanger separates the toxic combustion products from the safe, warm air by keeping the byproducts inside the heat exchanger where they can be funneled directly outside. If the heat exchanger is cracked, the toxic byproducts can escape.
  • Issues with the blower – the blower is the fan that pushes the warm air from the heat exchanger to your living spaces. If there are any issues with the blower – a worn fan belt, a faulty limit switch – there will be problems getting the warm air into your home.

What Is a Reversing Valve and How Does It Factor into Heat Pump Repair?

The reason heat pumps can offer your home both heating and cooling is due in large part to a component known as the reversing valve. This valve can change the direction in which the refrigerant flows, allowing your heat pump to change between heating and cooling. This valve works via a sliding mechanism; the mechanism is triggered by your dual–mode thermostat. However, sometimes the valve can get stuck, and it can be stuck in a specific mode or in–between modes, disabling its operation. A stuck reversing valve can sometimes be repaired, but many times it needs to be replaced. In either case, only a trained expert, like the ones at Air Conditioning Experts in Birmingham, should handle the repair or replacement of the valve.
