Why Duct Sealing is Necessary
Ducts have one problem that afflicts them above all others: duct leaks. These can occur for any number of reasons, whether during installation or through years of normal use. What is important, however, is not the causes but the effects. Though individual duct leaks are small, they can very quickly add up. The US Department of Energy has estimated that the average forced air system loses as much as 30% of its output on average to leaks in the ductwork. That means that you might be losing almost a third of your total operating costs for your air conditioner and heater to duct leaks. If you want your climate control system to operate as efficiently as possible, you’re going to need to have your ducts sealed.
The Process of Duct Sealing
First, your ducts need to be examined to identify any leaks that are present. After that, the leaks are painted over with a substance called "mastic." This is a kind of viscous epoxy that, once dry, will be stiff enough to seal the leak but flexible enough to move with the duct without cracking. Depending on the severity of the leak, the mastic might then be supplemented with duct tape. This isn’t the duct tape you’re thinking about, though (so please don’t attempt to seal the ducts yourself.) Duct sealing duct tape is reinforced with metal strips, which makes it strong enough to actually seal ducts in compliance with building codes.
Typically, mastic and regulation duct tape are enough to seal any leaks in your duct work. Keep in mind, however, that new duct leaks can and will open in your ducts over time. For that reason, you should have your ducts evaluated and sealed every few years in order to keep everything in good condition.
